Network Rail – Business Intelligence (BI) Project


The Head of Network Rail Infrastructure Projects stated “…that there is no easy portfolio view of Infrastructure Projects (function)….”  Data was inconsistent, unreliable and inaccurate.

The client wanted the data required to run the function consolidated into one place in an easy to understand format and could be analysed to support key management decisions.


The Prōject Team designed and delivered an Executive Management Dashboard and Line of Sight reports.  These are produced on a four weekly cycle showing business performance measures with a focus on delivery of railway infrastructure projects.  Measures cover Projects, Safety, HR, Finance, Government Milestones etc.

The reports drill down to the granular detail and display tag clouds, graphs and tables and are available for the central team and out based Region teams.  The result is that the data is now extracted direct from PAR on a weekly basis; the system uses APEX as an interface for BI and a direct input to Endeca so that the management reports can be published.

All of this solution was tested and piloted within the Prōject Model Office which allowed the client to have an agile-testing environment which could then be used within the final development.  This helped to achieve the tight time schedules of the project.
